Kerala has won accolades for energy efficiency at the national level by standing first in the Group 3 division of the State Energy Efficiency Index (SEEI).
President Droupadi Murmu presented the award to Additional Chief Secretary (Power) Puneet Kumar and Energy Management Centre – Kerala (EMC) director R. Harikumar in New Delhi on Sunday (December 14, 2025).
Kerala was selected for the award in view of the steps undertaken by the State to promote energy efficiency in the farm sector, power distribution, transport, industry, large buildings and the domestic sector, the EMC said. Schemes and activities carried out by the government and schemes implemented with financial assistanace from non-governmental institutions were considered in selecting the State for the award, it said.
The progress made by Kerala as a State that had notified the Energy Conservation and Sustainable Building Code Rules and included them in the Kerala Building Rules also proved vital. The EMC said that the award is a recognition for the “comprehensive approach” adopted by the Kerala government towards energy conservation and sustainable development.
