Manithaneya Makkal Katchi president M.H. Jawahirullah on Thursday (January 8, 2026) called for immediate government action to correct the addresses of fishing communities in official records.
His statement comes after The Hindu on Wednesday (January 7) reported that many residents of fishing hamlets in the city were finding it difficult to update records in Aadhaar and other documents, such as nativity certificates, due to lack of proper addresses. They claimed that this was because the names of streets and localities were missing in the records.
Mr. Jawahirullah said thousands of families in coastal areas, including Nochikuppam and Kovalam, are unable to update crucial documents like Aadhaar, voter IDs, and birth certificates due to discrepancies in government databases.
Despite spending hours at e-service centres, many applications are being rejected due to incomplete information, he said in a statement.
Mr. Jawahirullah cautioned that failure to rectify these errors could disenfranchise the fishing community, particularly during the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR). He urged the government to organise special camps to update addresses and ensure all relevant data is synchronised across government databases.
