In Pictures: Stampede at actor Vijay’s TVK rally in Karur

At least 39 people died in a stampede at a rally addressed by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and actor Vijay in Karur, Tamil Nadu on Saturday (September 27, 2025), as part of his State-wide political tour. Over 80 persons were injured.

As the event progressed, several people reportedly fainted in the crowd and were rushed to the Karur Medical College Hospital and private hospitals nearby.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced a solatium of ₹10 lakh to the families of those who died in the stampede, and ₹1 lakh for those who were injured and are being treated in hospitals. T.N. government has announced a commission to be headed by retired Judge Aruna Jagadeesan to probe into the circumstances that led to the stampeded, said Mr. Stalin.

The State government has announced a commission to be headed by retired judge Aruna Jagadeesan to probe the circumstances that led to the stampede, Mr. Stalin said. He directed the Collectors of Tiruchi, Salem, and Dindigul to go immediately to Karur and co-ordinate the relief effort.
