The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has denied reports that one of its MLAs had extended support to C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to form the government in Tamil Nadu.

IUML national president Kader Mohideen said the party remains firmly within the DMK-led alliance and had not issued any letter of support to the TVK.

“We have been part of the DMK alliance for several decades and there is no question of leaving it. If Mr. Vijay needs support, he should approach DMK president M.K. Stalin, since he, too, has urged the Governor to take steps to expedite formation of a new government,” Mr. Mohideen told The Hindu.

Responding to reports that one of the IUML MLAs had expressed support for Mr. Vijay, Mr. Mohideen dismissed them as baseless. “Our MLAs are in Chennai,” he said.

The IUML currently has two MLAs, elected from the Vaniyambadi and Papanasam constituencies.

Mr. Mohideen confirmed that the actor-politician had approached the party seeking support through a letter, but he reiterated the IUML’s stand.

“Our position is clear. We are part of the DMK alliance. At the same time, we are particular that the present situation should not lead to Governor’s rule,” he said.
