The Hyderabad Disaster Management & Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has intensified efforts to restore Pragathi Nagar Lake by curbing waste dumping and initiating clean-up measures.
After recently removing silt from the lake, HYDRAA has now erected fencing along a 1.5-km stretch of the road passing through the lake to prevent further dumping of garbage. The move follows complaints from local residents that chicken, meat and fish vendors, along with nearby shopkeepers, were indiscriminately dumping animal waste and other waste along the stretch, leading to severe stench in the area. Acting on the directions of HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath, officials cleared nearly 145 truckloads of accumulated animal waste from the site. Shopkeepers responsible for dumping waste were shifted to alternative locations and the area was vacated.
To prevent motorists and others from throwing garbage into the lake while passing through the road, HYDRAA installed fencing up to 10 metres in height along the stretch. Further development works are planned to ensure that sewage does not enter the lake, a statement from HYDRAA informed.
