Days after a concrete girder on the under-construction Aroor-Thuravoor elevated highway collapsed, killing a van driver, a heavy rubber sheet fell down during the works on Wednesday, in yet another incident of safety lapse. A tragedy was averted as people were away from the spot where the sheet fell.

The incident occurred around 2 p.m. near Kochuveli Junction, Chandiroor. The thick sheet used in construction work came down even as the safety audit of the ongoing construction of the six-lane elevated corridor was on. The National Highways Authority of India had appointed RITES Limited to conduct an urgent and comprehensive safety audit of the works in the wake of the girder collapse on November 13.

The audit team has been asked to ensure that the work undertaken on the site strictly follows the approved construction plans and methods.
