Torrential rains triggered by Cyclone Montha have caused widespread flooding across several parts of Warangal, Hanamkonda, Mahabubabad and Jangaon districts, prompting the administration to declare holidays for all educational institutions and issue a red alert for the next 24 hours.
Kalleda of Parvathagiri mandal in Warangal district recorded an unprecedented 36.7 cm of rainfall, which is the State’s highest rainfall, between 8.30 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, while Redlawada and Kapulakanaparthi received 31.6 cm and 28.23 cm respectively. Bheemadevarapalle in Hanamkonda reported 29.25 cm of rainfall. The downpour inundated several villages, including Yellanda in Wardhannapet mandal, and the colonies in Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) limits where floodwater entered houses, damaging essential commodities and forcing residents to seek temporary shelter. Many areas have been without power since evening. Flood waters have submerged the railway tracks across several stations in erstwhile combined Warangal district. The situation has forced the Railway authorities to halt train services.
Warangal East MLA and Forest, Environment and Endowments Minister Konda Surekha reviewed the situation with District Collector Satya Sharada and Police Commissioner Sunpreet Singh from the MLA’s camp office and directed officials to remain vigilant at the field level. She instructed them to coordinate efforts across departments to prevent loss of life and minimise damage to property and crops.
Officials were asked to identify low-lying areas, prepare rehabilitation centres in advance and ensure prompt evacuation of residents wherever necessary. The Minister directed tahsildars, MPDOs, ASHA and Anganwadi workers to stay in the field, monitor conditions, and distribute food, fruits and ORS packets to affected people, especially children and the elderly.
Warning that overflowing ponds and streams could pose serious risks, she instructed the Irrigation department officials to monitor water levels continuously and take up emergency repairs on a war footing. Authorities were told to erect barricades and warning boards near flooded roads and streams to prevent accidents.
The Minister emphasised sanitation and public health measures, directing GWMC to undertake chlorination and cleaning drives. Residents have been advised not to step out unless essential.
