Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday (August 10, 2026) said the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign is a tribute to the sacrifices of freedom fighters, and urged people to display the national flag at their homes with pride and respect.
Addressing a ‘Tiranga Yatra’ organised in Gorakhpur under the campaign, Mr. Adityanath said the tricolour represents the “immortal saga” of the sacrifices made by revolutionaries and freedom fighters during India’s struggle for independence.
“This tricolour is the name of the immortal saga of the sacrifices of India’s revolutionaries and freedom fighters. It is an inspiration from that immortal saga,” he said.
The Chief Minister said the national flag evolved during the freedom movement, recalling that “Swadeshi” became a slogan of the freedom struggle in 1905 and the spinning wheel was later incorporated into the flag used by freedom fighters.
He said independent India adopted the tricolour with the Ashoka Chakra, representing the country’s States and its ideals.
Mr. Adityanath said it is a matter of pride that citizens can now display the national flag at their homes.
“It is our good fortune that for the national flag for which citizens earlier had to fight in courts to get the right to hoist it at their homes, today every citizen can proudly display it,” he said.
He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi with ensuring the right to display the flag at homes after amendments to the Flag Code in 2022.
“‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ is part of Prime Minister Modi’s call that every citizen can experience pride by hoisting the tricolour at their home as a symbol of India’s honour, dignity and glory,” Mr. Adityanath said.
The Chief Minister said the campaign, launched in 2022, has continued in 2023, 2024 and 2025 and is reaching its peak this year as well.
He said Uttar Pradesh has set a target of hoisting the tricolour at five crore homes this year.
“Every institution— government, semi-government and private— industries and homes will hoist the tricolour,” he said.
Referring to India’s freedom struggle, Mr. Adityanath said the country’s independence was not achieved suddenly but came after immense sacrifices by people across regions.
He recalled the contributions of Mangal Pandey, Shaheed Bandhu Singh, Rani Lakshmibai, Tatya Tope and Dhan Singh Kotwal, among others.
Recalling the Chauri Chaura incident of 1922 and the Kakori train action of 1925, Mr. Adityanath said the sacrifices of revolutionaries must be remembered with respect.
He said revolutionaries, including Ram Prasad Bismil, Roshan Singh, Ashfaqullah Khan, Chandrashekhar Azad, Sachindra Nath Sanyal and Rajendra Nath Lahiri, had sought to use the money recovered from the British government for India’s freedom struggle.
“The British called it a dacoity. What greater insult to the revolutionaries could there be than that the incident continued to be described as the Kakori train dacoity even after Independence,” he said.
Mr. Adityanath said the Modi government referred to it as the “Kakori Train Action”, highlighting its role in the freedom movement.
He also said several revolutionaries did not receive the recognition they deserved after Independence.
“After Independence, remember that statues of these revolutionaries were not allowed to be installed. Memorials in their honour were not allowed to be built, nor were institutions and roads permitted to be named after them.
“Instead, the names of members of one family were used for institutions across the country,” he said without naming any party.
“Today, these revolutionaries are being given respect. This ‘Tiranga Yatra’ is also a symbol of respect for those immortal souls and freedom fighters,” he said.
The Chief Minister urged participants to carry the national flag throughout the procession and take it home after the yatra.
“Do not throw the tricolour away. Take it to your home and hoist it there. Take a ‘Selfie with Tiranga’ and upload it,” he said.
He also appealed to people to respect the national flag, ‘Vande Mataram’ and the national anthem, saying respect for national symbols should be the responsibility of every citizen.
He said that this year also marks the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’ and urged participants to raise slogans of “Vande Mataram” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” during the procession.
Mr. Adityanath had participated in ‘Tiranga Yatra’ in Lucknow on Sunday (August 9, 2026).
