HYDERABAD

Vice Chairman of the Telangana State Planning Board G. Chinna Reddy requested the Centre to retain the nomenclature of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme named after Mahatma Gandhi as MGNREGS.

In a statement, Mr. Reddy said on Tuesday that removing Mahatma Gandhi’s name is a malicious act and the BJP-led government at the Centre will have to pay for its misadventure. The scheme successfully used by rural and urban poor should not lose its association with Mahatma Gandhi, he suggested.

Launched in Anantapur by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and then UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, removal of the MGNREGS name for the scheme is unjust and uncalled for, particularly when BJP had no role in the country’s freedom struggle.
