The Mandya district administration has ramped up security in the island town of Srirangapatna to prevent any untoward incident during the Hanuma Male Sankirtana Yatra celebrations, organised by the same outfit.

The sankirtana yatra is a sensitive issue as the Hindu Jagran Vedike has been claiming that the Hanuman temple in the town was destroyed during the period of Tipu Sultan and replaced by the existing Jamia Masjid in 1786. Hence, the HJV wants custody of the site to reconstruct the temple.

The Moodalabagilu Sankirtana Yatra was slated to commence from Nimishambha temple on the banks of the river Cauvery at 10 a.m. followed by the sankirtana yatra from the same venue at 11 a.m.

The yatris were scheduled to march to Srirangapatna Fort for a darshan of Moodalabagilu Anjaneyaswami at the shrine.

Lohit V. Urs of Moodalabagilu Hanuma Mala Samithi told reporters in Mysuru on December 2 that there will be ‘mala visarjan’ and distribution of prasad near Sriranganathaswamy temple.

Mr. Urs said that the devotees and members of the Hindu community have vowed to rebuild the temple at the original spot, and the yatra was an annual ritual to express their resolve to meet the objective.

As Mandya was rocked by communal clashes recently, the district administration and the police have taken adequate measures to prevent the situation from snowballing into a crisis.

Earlier, the district administration in Mandya had organised a communal harmony chaired by Deputy Commissioner Kumar who said that all cooperation for the religious and sacred observance of the sankirtana yatra would be extended. But he said that it was everyone’s primary duty to ensure that the religious sentiments of other faiths were not hurt during this occasion.

Dr. Kumar said permission has been granted to religious observance, and it should be done peacefully and nobody should act in a manner so as to disturb peace and order in society.

The district administration has also cautioned the organisers that it was also their responsibility to ensure that there was no violation of law.

District Superintendent of Police Mallikarjun Baladandi informed that over 100 CCTV cameras would be installed, and the police would keep vigil in sensitive areas.
