At least 13 children at the Scheduled Tribes Gurukul in Jogulamba Gadwal district fell ill after having breakfast in the hostel mess on Tuesday.

All the affected children were said to be stable and are being monitored.

According to the hostel warden at the Gurukul, the students were served upma with roasted chickpea powder and ragi jawa for breakfast. While some students ate it, soon others complained of worms in the upma, and they were asked to discard the whole meal. They were given bananas and a biscuit pack and sent to school.

It was after reaching the school that students complained of stomach ache, vomiting, and collapsed after feeling giddy. They were all rushed to the Government General Hospital and administered first aid.

Videos of the incident showed school staff rushing the students to the ward, where they were administered IV fluids.

The doctors attending the students suspect that food contamination would have led to the situation. All the students were in a stable condition, they said.

Students who spoke to media persons at the hospital said they found worms in the upma served and that was the reason for their condition.
