Governor S. Abdul Nazeer described women’s empowerment as more than just a symbolic phrase—it is a promise to unshackle society, paving the way for an equal and representative democracy that integrates all citizens into the mainstream.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the two-day national conference on parliamentary and legislative committees on ‘Women’s Empowerment,’ which concluded here on Monday, he recalled the high regard for women during the Vedic period and subsequent eras in ancient India. “Opportunities for women in spiritual, literary, and intellectual domains were immense,” he said, reading out a verse to underline that disrespect and harassment of women can cost society dearly.

From the abolition of the Dasi system to reservations in Parliament, women’s empowerment has progressed through several phases over the decades, Mr. Nazeer noted. He also expressed concern that women’s representation in the Lok Sabha hovers around just 14%, far below the global average of 26.5%, despite provisions for 33% reservation in Parliament and legislatures.

Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, K. Raghu Ramakrishna Raju, stressed the need for the country to improve its global ranking on women’s empowerment. He also praised the State and district administration for the excellent dinner arrangements on Monday at Chandragiri Fort.

Selfie moment

Several delegates took time to capture selfies with celebrity MPs and MLAs. Rajya Sabha member and philanthropist Sudha Murty was particularly surrounded by visitors, especially students, eager for a photograph.

Beyond the formal itinerary, the two-day event offered delegates opportunities to engage with local culture, including temple visits, regional cuisines, fabrics, and art forms. Chandragiri MLA Pulivarthi Nani hosted the dinner at the historic Chandragiri Fort, while Srikalahasti MLA Bojjala Venkata Sudheer Reddy arranged darshan at the famed Srikalahastheeswara Swamy Devasthanam, known for the ‘Rahu Ketu Puja,’ and introduced the delegates to the unique ‘Srikalahasti Kalamkari painting.’
