Arrests of Trinamool Congress leaders continued on Tuesday (June 2, 2026), with former Kalna MLA Debo Prasad Bag and Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) councillor Sachin Singh being taken into custody in separate cases of alleged corruption and extortion.

Since the BJP came to power in West Bengal, nearly a hundred Trinamool Congress leaders, mostly local-level workers, have been arrested over allegations of corruption and post-poll violence linked to the 2021 Assembly elections. According to the police, Mr. Bag was arrested after huge quantities of government relief materials were found at his house.

“An FIR was registered on Monday (June 1, 2026), following which a police team searched his residence. He initially refused to cooperate with the police as he did not even open the door,” Amarjit Biswas, an officer at Kalna police station, said.

“The police detained him late on Monday night, and after a detailed interrogation, he was arrested on Tuesday. The police also seized some government relief materials, food grains, and a few toys meant for distribution among public from his residence,” the officer added.

“We are not yet sure why he stored such a huge quantity of government relief materials at his house. We are probing whether he was planning to sell them or had any other plans,” the officer added. The police said that local residents also questioned his “luxurious lifestyle”.

The Narkeldanga police arrested KMC councillor (ward 36) Sachin Singh over allegations of extortion, bribery and intimidation.

An officer from the Narkeldanga police station said that a group of people surrounded Mr. Singh’s residence on Tuesday morning and started sloganeering against him. “The angry mob also hurled stones targeting his house, accusing him of taking bribes, extorting money and assaulting and threatening local people over the years,” the officer stated. The police dispersed the crowd and later arrested Mr. Singh based on an FIR lodged by some locals.

Earlier, the police also arrested Bishnupur MLA Dilip Mondal, Purbasthali North MLA Tapan Chattopadhyay, former Burdwan South MLA Khokon Das, former Chinsurah MLA Asit Mazumder, and several Trinamool councillors, including Sudip Polley from KMC ward 123.

Meanwhile, former Katwa MLA Rabindranath Chattopadhyay was hospitalised on Tuesday after he was allegedly attacked by BJP workers over accusations of misappropriating relief materials.

“Mr. Chattopadhyay was rescued and admitted to a hospital. We have not received any FIR from either side so far and no arrests have been made,” Jayanta Pal, an officer of Katwa Police station, said.

Resignation continues

Meanwhile, resignations kept pouring in from several Trinamool leaders over the last few days. Even on Tuesday, Member Mayor-In-Councils (MMIC) in KMC Tarak Singh resigned from his post, citing “mental disturbance” and lack of proper responsibilities.

Earlier, Mr. Singh had skipped a meeting called by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with KMC councillors and accused the party leadership of failing to protect workers allegedly facing attacks from the BJP supporters. He also accused Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee of destroying the party and its image.
