Yet another case of death by drowning was reported in Kochi after a 16-year-old boy died at Kangarappady in Kalamassery on Friday evening. The incident comes close on the heels of the recent drowning of 26-year-old Delhi-based model Divyanshu Joshy in a quarry in Kochi.

According to officials at the Thrikkakkara police station, the boy, who had arrived with a large group of friends, was bathing in a pond at Kangarappady.

“The boys, aged between 15 and 18, were spending time at the pond when the incident occurred. Since it was a large group, no one noticed that the boy was missing. Once they became aware of it, rescue personnel were called,” said a police official.

The Fire and Rescue Services personnel rescued the boy who was still found to be breathing, the police said.

“Although the boy was taken to Government Medical College, Kalamassery, he couldn’t be saved,” he added.

The incident occurred between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. While the pond is used for bathing, the boy was not a resident of the locality. The police further added that no cases of drowning had been reported from the area in recent times.

Meanwhile, a few cases of drowning have been reported in the district in recent times, including the death of a teenage boy in a lake at Nettoor; that of three 22-year-old college students in the Palavanpadi River at Vadattupara near Kothamangalam; and three nursing students in the Periyar Valley canal near Perumbavoor.

The police conducted an inquest and registered an FIR for an unnatural death.
