A large number of people turned up early on Sunday (January 11, 2026) morning for the Fit Mysuru walkathon, an initiative aimed at shaping Mysuru into a healthy City.

Jointly by University of Mysore, Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), GSS Group of Institutions, Gyms Association of Mysuru and several other organisations, the Fit Mysuru walkathon titled as ‘Community Health Awareness Walk’, was flagged off by Minister for Social Welfare H.C. Mahadevappa, who is also the Minister in-charge of Mysuru district, at the Open Air Theatre in Manasagangothri.

Overwhelming response

General public, school children, college students, yoga enthusiasts and others participants belonging to different age groups turned up in unprecedented numbers for the walkathon that passed through Bogadi Road, Saraswathipuram, Fire Station Road, Maharaja’s College Grounds, Krishnaraja Boulevard, Hunsur Main Road and Paduvarahalli junction before concluding at Senate Bhavan premises in Manasagangothri.

The response for the walkathon was more than the expected 10,000, said a statement from the organisers, pointing out that about 7,000 to 8,000 had registered for the event in advance. “The mission of the walkathon is to transform Mysuru into a Fity Mysuru, Healthy Mysuru, Clean Mysuru, Green Mysuru and Safe Mysuru”, the statement added.

Pledge of cleanliness

At the start of the walkathon, MCC Commissioner administered a pledge of cleanliness to the gathered crowd.

The organisers also arranged drinking water stations along the route of the walkathon, medical aid centre, ambulance services and volunteer guidance. At the end of the walkathon, refreshments were also arranged for the participants.

Mr. Mahadevappa, who flagged off the walkathon, said the initiative was aimed at shaping Mysuru City into a healthy city by nurturing the habits necessary to keep everyone fit.

The walkathon participants included Chamarajanagar MP Sunil Bose, Deputy Commissioner of Mysuru Lakshmikanth Reddy, Vice Chancellor of University of Mysore N.K. Lokanath, Registrar M.K. Savitha, Mysuru City Police Commissioner Seema Latkar, Mysuru Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Yukesh Kumar and others.
