Driver killed after lorry overturns on Chennai – Bengaluru Highway

A 50-year-old lorry driver was killed when the vehicle overturned into a pit from the carriageway of Chennai – Bengaluru Highway (NH 48) at Vannivedu village near Walajah town in Ranipet on Tuesday. .

Police said the deceased has been identified as S. Velusamy, a native of Karur. It was around 5.30 a.m when Velusamy was driving the vehicle from Bengaluru to Chennai. As he was driving on the stretch, he suddenly lost control of the vehicle after he drowsed off behind the wheels.

The vehicle plunged into a pit away from the carriageway of the stretch. He was killed on the spot. Immediately, passersby and other motorists rushed to the spot. They alerted Walajah police, who also rushed to the spot.

Police managed to remove the vehicle from the pit. The body was sent to Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore for postmortem. A case was registered. A probe is under way.
