A portion of a private textile showroom at Katpadi in Vellore on Chittoor – Cuddalore Highway was damaged after fire broke out in the facility, resulting in thick smoke in the area.

The police said that it was around 2.30 p.m. when a few workers in the showroom noticed thick smoke coming from the diesel generator. Along with other workers, they tried to douse the fire, but it had already spread to the unit.

The police said that workers and other staff members were evacuated safely. On being informed, fire fighters from Katpadi reached the spot and doused the fire after a few hours.

A case was registered by Virunchipuram police. The generator had around 80 litres of fuel at the time of the accident. The police said that continued operation of the generator at the facility due to scheduled power cuts could have triggered an electrical short circuit resulting in the fire. A probe is under way.
