The Andhra Police suffered a set back in Bihar, when they tried to shift IPS officer, M. Sunil Kumar Naik, after arresting him in Patna, in the alleged custodial torture case of former Narsapuram MP K. Raghu Rama Krishna Raju.

A team of police, headed by Superintendent of Police (SP) A.R. Damodar, arrested Sunil Kumar Naik from his residence at Rajabanshi Nagar in Patna, on Monday.

The officer was produced in the jurisdictional court in Patna, seeking transit remand, which was rejected by the court. The court reportedly directed the A.P. Police not to arrest the IPS officer for 30 days.

The court pulled up the A.P. Police for not following the inter-State arrest procedure of not producing the requisite documents, not producing the arrest warrant and submitting the petition in Telugu language without translating the documents to Hindi or English.

The jurisdictional court also expressed displeasure over the manner in which the IPS officer was arrested.

It was alleged that the A.P. Police carried out the operation without giving intimation to the local Shastri Nagar police. The local police and the lawyers expressed concern over the behaviour of the A.P. Police, as few of the police personnel allegedly came in plain clothes and did not mention their identity. They alleged that the arrest of Sunil Kumar Naik was politically motivated.

The advocates also alleged that the A.P. Police detained the IPS officer’s mother in a room during the time of the arrest.
