Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday (October 1, 2026) said that he had held a meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on the sidelines of the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in the U.S. Mr. Goyal said that the two leaders discussed the “early conclusion” of an interim agreement under the India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement.
While Mr. Goyal did not mention discussing the proposed 100% tariffs that the U.S. is looking to levy on India, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal had earlier said that “all trade issues” would be discussed by the Minister during his visit to the U.S.

“Met USTR Jamieson Greer on the sidelines of the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee,” Mr. Goyal posted on X on Thursday morning. “Had a productive discussion with USTR Greer towards early conclusion of a mutually beneficial interim agreement under the India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement.”
The two also exchanged views on G20 deliberations under the ongoing U.S. Chairship, he added.
The U.S. has enacted a law — the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, 2026 — that could see tariffs of up to 100% being imposed on countries such as India that import large quantities of Russian oil.

China, the other major importer of Russian oil and gas, has worked out a deal so that no additional tariffs can be levied on it until January 2027.
“When the bilateral takes place, all trade issues will be discussed,” Mr. Agrawal had told reporters ahead of Mr. Goyal’s trip to the U.S. “Even the ongoing FTA negotiations and the way forward on that will be on the agenda for discussion.”
Mr. Goyal also held a meeting with Maroš Šefčovič, the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security.
“Reviewed progress towards the signing and entry into force of the India-EU FTA,” Mr. Goyal said. “Also exchanged views on progress under the India-EU Trade and Technology Council, meaningful WTO reform and shared G20 priorities.”
The India-EU FTA, dubbed the “mother of all deals”, is expected to be signed on December 16 during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Brussels, and come into force in early 2027 once the European Parliament passes it.
