The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Sabarimala gold misappropriation case recorded the statement of senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala on Sunday.

In his statement that was recorded at the Crime Branch office in Thiruvananthapuram, he reiterated allegations of international links in the crime.

He later told media persons that he had shared all the information available to him regarding the Sabarimala gold theft scam with the SIT. He said he informed the SIT about the alleged links between the gold theft and international antiques smugglers.

“I had earlier conveyed the information I received to the SIT chief through a letter. Based on that, I was asked to appear before the team and give my statement. I have now shared all the details available to me,” he said.

He also pointed out that the Kerala High Court had observed that international antique smugglers, including Subhash Kapoor, were involved in the case. He clarified that the inputs he provided were not evidence, but information he had received in his capacity as a public representative. “It is now the responsibility of the SIT to probe further and ascertain the facts,” he added.

According to Mr. Chennithala, it was up to the investigators to decide whether or not to question the businessman who shared the information with him. He declined to disclose the details shared by the businessman, stating that making them public could seriously affect the ongoing investigation.

The Congress leader added that the gold plates missing from Sabarimala had not yet been recovered. “It is crucial to find out where the missing gold is,” he added.
