The Additional Mahila Court on Thursday granted the police one-day custody of the three accused in the Coimbatore gang-rape case.

The three men – T. Karuppasamy alias Satheesh, 30, his brother T. Kaleeswaran, alias Karthik, 21, and their relative M. Guna, alias Thavasi, 20, of Madurai district – were produced before judge N.G. Sindhu on Thursday afternoon.

The judge directed the police to produce the accused before the court by 4 p.m. on Friday after interrogating them in custody.

The police brought the accused from Coimbatore Central Prison to the court in two ambulances. Their faces were covered with monkey caps. The accused were taken to the court hall with the support of two stretchers and a wheelchair as they were unable to walk on their own due to the injuries they suffered in the police firing on the night of November 3. The police had shot them in their legs when they allegedly attempted to escape at Vellakinar in the city.

Karuppusamy and Guna had suffered gunshots on both legs and Kaleeswaran suffered injury in one leg in the firing. The trio, according to the police, had attacked a head constable while attempting to escape from the police.
