With the deep depression over west-central and adjoining areas of southwest Bay of Bengal and north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts moving slowly, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, forecast heavy rain for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts on Tuesday (December 2).

The system, a remnant of Cyclone Ditwah, is very likely to move slowly northwards parallel to north Tamil Nadu-south Andhra Pradesh coasts and maintain the intensity of deep depression over the next six hours. Thereafter, it is likely to move slowly northwards and is very likely to weaken into a depression during the subsequent 12 hours.

As of 5.30 p.m. on Monday, the deep depression, which remained stationary during the past six hours, was about 50 km east of Chennai, 140 km northeast of Puducherry, 160 km north-northeast of Cuddalore, and 170 km south-southeast of Nellore. The minimum distance of the centre of the deep depression from the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts is about 35 km.

The system brought heavy rain to Chennai city and its surrounding districts on Monday, leading to waterlogging and traffic congestion in many areas. Till 7 p.m., several weather stations in Tiruvallur recorded heavy rain. Puzhal registered 129 mm, Good Will School in Villivakkam 83.5 mm, Poonamallee 40.5 mm, Cholavaram 117 mm, Ponneri 125 mm, Redhills 161 mm, Gummidipoondi 94 mm, and Avadi 71 mm.

In Kancheepuram district, Hindustan University recorded 46.5 mm of rainfall and LMOIS Kolapamma 37.5mm. In Chennai district, Nungambakkam received 94.6 mm of rain, Meenambakkam 53.5 mm, Meenambakkam ISRO 62 mm, Ennore Port 111 mm, YMCA Nandanam 78.5 mm, Anna University 72.5 mm, NIOT Pallikaranai 66.7 mm, and Taramani 62.4 mm.
