Poet and lyricist Sreekumaran Thampi has been selected for the first Devarajan award instituted by the Thiruvananthapuram chapter of the College of Engineering Trivandrum Alumni Association (CETAAT).
The award, for contributions to Malayalam film music, comprises a purse of ₹50,000, a statuette, and a citation.
The award will be presented at the sixth edition of Devaragam Sandhya, a programme by CETAAT at Tagore Theatre at 5.30 p.m. on October 5.
CETAAT has been organising Devaragam Sandhya since 2017. Every year, songs written by lyricists who worked with G. Devarajan are presented in the musical evening.
In connection with the 50th death anniversary of Vayalar Rama Varma, songs of the Vayalar-Devarajan duo will be presented this year.
The alumni association decided to introduce the Devarajan award too this year. A three-member jury led by poet, lyricist, and former bureaucrat K. Jayakumar selected Mr. Thampi for the first Devarajan award.
