The increase in the number of new universities in recent years has impacted the internal revenue of old universities, said M.C. Sudhakar, Minister for Higher Education, in the Legislative Council in Belagavi on Wednesday.
Answering member Talwar Sabanna’s question on the financial condition of Gulbarga University, during Zero Hour, the Minister said that in recent years, many new universities were set up without considering the financial implications on the old ones.
Huge financial needs
Mysore University requires ₹115 crore annually to clear pensions. Similarly, Dharwad University required ₹140 crore for pensions. “After the new universities were set up, the number of colleges affiliated to the old universities came down, bringing down the internal resources,” the Minister said.
A Cabinet sub-committee, headed by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, had been constituted to study the financial position of State universities and make recommendations. The committee had discussed the issue with the Finance Department officers and the university officials. The committee would submit its report to the Cabinet soon.
“Before the next Budget, the State government will take steps to strengthen the universities,” the Minister promised.
