The Villupuram district police have stepped up surveillance by installing CCTV cameras at important junctions and networks of national highways covering a radius of 20 kms.

As many as 14 high-resolution CCTVs have been installed encompassing the stretch of Tirukoyilur Road from Indira Nagar to Four Roads junction, the stretch from Four Roads junction to Old bus stand, Panampattu junction to Koliyanur Road, the stretch of Villupuram-Chennai national highway from Muthampalayam bypass to New bus stand and the stretch of Trichy Road from Periyar Nagar to Janakipuram bypass.

In addition, as many as 86 CCTVs have been installed at approach roads connecting the highways and major roads.

“The CCTV cameras, each with a network video recorder and backup have been linked to the newly constructed Police Control Room at the Integrated Collectorate complex in Villupuram. Since the backup of every camera could be retrieved at the control room, investigations could be carried out effectively,” a police officer said.

The police control room was inaugurated by District Collector Sheik Abdul Rahman and Deputy Inspector General of Police (Villupuram Range) E.S. Uma on Tuesday. Superintendent of Police P. Saravanan was present.

The cameras will be able to trap erring motorists for offences including red-light jumping, over-speeding, use of mobile phones while driving, and non-adherence to helmet and seat belt rules. Number plates of such vehicles will be captured by the cameras. This will also be useful for the police in other aspects, including prevention and detection of crimes, the police said.
