A 48-year-old man, N. Ajay Kumar, who met with an accident recently and was declared brain dead while receiving treatment at Manipal Hospitals here on Wednesday, gave a new lease of life to four patients after his family consented to organ donation.

According to a press release from the hospital, Ajay Kumar met with an accident on February 23 while getting down from a bus near Gunadala bus stop. Ajay Kumar, who suffered a head injury, was immediately shifted to a local hospital. When there was no improvement in his condition, he was brought to Manipal Hospitals in critical condition on February 24.

Despite the best possible medical efforts and continuous monitoring, his neurological condition deteriorated, according to the press note. After conducting all mandated clinical and neurological tests, the patient was declared brain dead on Wednesday evening.

In an act of compassion, the family consented to organ donation, as part of which the donor’s liver and one kidney were transplanted to the patients at Manipal Hospitals, Vijayawada, while another kidney was sent to Kamineni Hospitals in the city, and the corneas were sent to LV Prasad Eye Hospital.

The organ retrieval was conducted as per established medical and legal protocols under the supervision of Andhra Pradesh Jeevan Dhan Chairman K. Rambabu and Hospital Director J. Ramnjaneya Reddy, the hospital management said.
