Two large empty sheds, which were under renovation in a poultry farm at Pudur village in Ranipet district, were destroyed in a fire accident.

The police said that the four-acre poultry farm was owned by K. Lakshmipathy, 38, a farmer. The farm, which comprises four tin sheet-roofed sheds. Each shed, on an average, can accommodate at least 6,000 chickens. As part of the restoration works, Lakshmipathy relocated around 20,000 chickens to a temporary accommodation in his farmland.

The poultry sheds were empty when a few residents noticed a smoke in one of the sheds. Before the residents could call for help from neighbours, the fire engulfed the two sheds within a few minutes. Firefighters from Ranipet town rushed to the spot and put out the blaze after an hour. Fire was restricted to affected poultry sheds alone. Thimiri police also inspected the spot. A case was registered and further probe is under way.
