The Ernakulam Central police have launched an investigation after the body of a newborn was found floating in the backwaters near Marine Drive on Tuesday evening.

The body was spotted around 4 p.m. near the Rainbow Bridge. Initial examination suggested the infant may have been born prematurely at seven months, with the umbilical cord still attached. A visible injury was found on the baby’s head, though the police said it was unclear whether this occurred before or after the body hit the water.

Based on the state of decomposition, the police estimate the body to be at least 24 hours old. Residents noted that the area was clear in the morning, leading to suspicion that the body might have drifted towards the shore during the evening high tide.

The police have registered a case and are examining hospital and clinic records for recent childbirths, particularly premature deliveries. The body has been shifted to Ernakulam Government Medical College, Kalamassery, for autopsy.
