A team of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) met Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Sunday (September 28, 2025) and staked a claim to form the next Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) government.
The team led by BPF president Hagrama Mohilary invited the Governor to the swearing-in ceremony on October 3.
“The Governor’s presence will add value to the event as October 3 is his birthday. If he visits (Kokrajhar, the BTC headquarters 220 km west of Guwahati), we will celebrate his birthday together,” Mr. Mohilary said after emerging from the Raj Bhavan.
The BPF had invited Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to the oath-taking ceremony and was trying to invite a few Cabinet Ministers, he said.
Mr. Mohilary appreciated the “positive statements” from the Chief Minister and his United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) counterpart, Pramod Boro, who submitted his resignation as the Chief Executive Member of the BTC to the Governor on Sunday (September 28, 2025).
“We are willing to work in coordination with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the UPPL, and other political parties. Our priority will be to ensure the progress of the BTC and its people,” Mr. Mohilary said.
Among the immediate plans of the new BTC government is a memorial park and a statue of cultural icon Zubeen Garg in Kokrajhar, he said.
The BPF, which severed its ties with the BJP before the 2020 BTC elections, defied the odds to win 28 of the 40 seats across five districts — Baksa, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Tamulpur, and Udalguri — that the BTC administers.
The UPPL, which ruled the BTC in alliance with the BJP and the regional Gana Suraksha Party, managed to win seven seats, while the BJP bagged five. The tally was almost half the number of seats the two parties had won five years ago.
Earlier, after resigning as the BTC chief, Mr. Boro thanked the people of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) for letting his party govern for five years. “Our focus has always been on peace in the BTC, and it will continue to be so. We are assessing our loss, and will take corrective measures,” he said, adding that his party would support the new government.
