People of Bihar have made good use of the ‘Meri Panchayat’ app, which provides information on development activities happening in a panchayat through their mobile handsets, with over three lakh people utilising it.

A total of 3,22,874 users in Bihar have downloaded the app on their mobile phones, making the State the fourth highest in the country in terms of usage, as per information available on the official website meripanchayat.gov.in. Meanwhile, neighbouring Uttar Pradesh ranks first in the country in terms of app usage.

According to data available on the Ministry of Panchayati Raj’s official site, the app has been downloaded the most by 11,63,719 users in Uttar Pradesh, followed by Maharashtra with 8,37,336 downloads, Gujarat 3,30,216, whereas Bihar ranked fourth with 3,22,874 downloads on their mobile devices.

With an aim of empowering rural India, the department has developed theapp, through which all essential information related to panchayats such as welfare schemes, funds, development works, and weather forecasts are made available on a single platform.

Rural citizens can also provide suggestions related to development schemes through the app. Besides, they can also review and evaluate ongoing or completed projects and obtain information about the agenda of Gram Sabha meetings and the decisions taken there.

As a result, people in rural areas have shown interest in using this app proving to be an important step in making rural India smart, empowered and self-reliant.

The integrated digital platform has been designed and developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC). Its objective is to enhance transparency and accountability in panchayat functioning as well as to strengthen participation between rural citizens and the government, thereby reinforcing local self-governance.

Information that can be accessed through this app includes, real-time information on panchayat budgets, receipts, payments and development schemes, details of elected representatives and panchayat officials, information on public infrastructure and civic services in their Panchayat.
