An AI-generated video, posted on the X account of the Bihar unit of the Congress, showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as having a dream in which his late mother appears, has drawn severe criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In the 36-second clip, posted on Wednesday (September 10, 2025), it is depicted such that the PM’s mother appears in his dream and rebukes him over his politics. She says that first he made her stand in a long queue during demonetisation, later made reels by washing her feet and now doing politics in her name.

The BJP on Friday (September 12, 2025) targeted the Congress over the clip, with Union Minister Giriraj Singh saying that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had stooped to a new low.

“Rahul Gandhi himself does not respect his own mother; then how come he will respect another’s mother? The way Modi ji’s mother has been shown in the AI video needs to be investigated and legal action should be taken against those responsible for disrespecting the PM’s mother,” Mr. Singh told the press in Begusarai.

He said the party first used abusive language against the PM’s mother and now releases an AI video. The Congress would have to repent for its action in the coming days, he said.

Stating the people of India would teach a “life-time lesson” to the Congress, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said it had lost its credibility and the trust of the people. “…No wonder the Congress party is continuously losing elections. They are not learning any lessons even from being rejected by the public. The Congress party will never be able to understand the sacred meaning of the Indian mother,” he said.

‘Declining values’

Former Union Minister and senior BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad posted on X: “Earlier, Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji’s late mother was subjected to derogatory words from the Congress-RJD platform, and now an AI-generated video of his mother has been created to insult her. This reflects the declining level of the Congress party’s values and political decorum.”

“The depravity in the Congress party’s thinking and values is such that, on one hand, a mother is being insulted, while on the other hand, prior to this, the valour of Mother India’s brave sons was questioned, thereby insulting their sacrifice. Congress-RJD should remember that Bihar will never forgive those who insult mothers-daughters and the brave sons of Mother India,” he said.

Through its X handle, the BJP said, “For the Congress, the country is merely a hub for politics and the people nothing but a vote bank, but for PM Modi, this nation is his mother and the citizens his family, for whom he has devoted himself completely.” The people of Bihar would decide to what level the Congress had “stooped”, it added.

Nothing disrespectful: Khera

The Congress said no disrespect has been shown to the Prime Minister or his late mother. “What is their objection? Just because a mother is trying to educate the son to do something right, where is it disrespectful, neither to the mother, whom we respect dearly, nor to the son,” Congress’s media and publicity department head Pawan Khera said.

“He (Mr. Modi) needs to just understand that there are ways of trying to educate him, ‘this is your rajdharma’, the mother is trying to explain to him. Where is the disrespect? We have shown no disrespect to his late mother,” he told PTI Videos.

On August 27, a youth allegedly abused the PM’s late mother during the Opposition’s Voter Adhikar Yatra in Darbhanga. Later, the youth was arrested. Mr. Modi, during a video address from New Delhi on September 2, came down heavily on the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress. He said that the abuse was an insult not just to his mother but to the mothers, sisters, and daughters of the country.

Senior BJP leader and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary said the Congress had crossed the limits of depravity and was now misusing AI technology to insult the late mother of the Prime Minister.

“This is proof of mental bankruptcy and the degenerate thinking of the Congress. This is an insult to every mother figure in the country. The land of Bihar never forgives those who insult the mother,” Mr. Choudhary said.

‘reprehensible and insensitive’

Women leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar criticised the Congress in a joint press conference. BJP MLC Anamika Singh Patel asked if it was right to say “such reprehensible and insensitive things” about a “departed soul”. “The Congress and the RJD did not express regret after abusing ‎the PM’s mother from a political stage. Now they are using the departed soul in the upcoming elections which is unfortunate,“ she said.

Janata Dal (United) spokesperson Anupriya Yadav said the Opposition had crossed all limits of shamelessness in politics by bringing the PM’s mother into the election. ‎”Bihar is giving a direction to the country in the matter of women empowerment, while the Opposition has got the PM’s mother as its subject. One mistake can be forgiven, but the second mistake clearly shows that the Opposition is on the verge of collapse,” Ms. Yadav said.

‎‎Sonam Paswan of Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) said that while the NDA was engaged in making women self-reliant and empowered, the Opposition was engaged in insulting women. “This is not the first case; their character has been to insult women. In the last election, LJP (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan’s mother was also insulted,” Ms. Paswan said.

‎‎Smita Sharma of Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) and ‎Anita Kushwaha of Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) were also present at the press conference and they too slammed the Opposition over the issue.
