With petrol and diesel prices continuing to rise and demand for electric vehicles (EVs), including two-wheelers, cars, autorickshaws and buses, increasing steadily, the Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company Limited (Bescom) plans to install EV charging stations on a pilot basis at 11 toll plazas along the Bengaluru-Pune highway (NH-48).

A senior official from the Bescom said, “We have done a detailed study of how feasible it will be to install the EV charging stations in toll plazas. We have selected NH-48 as it connects two States–Goa and Maharashtra–with Bengaluru. We are in talks with the National Highway Authority of India.”

“We are installing 120kW DC fast chargers which are useful to charge most modern EVs in the market today from 20% to 80% in just 20 minutes. Since long distance rides are an issue with THE EVs, many still buy fossil fuel run cars. Charging infrastructure along the highway could change that,” he added.

Compared to private charging stations that charge ₹16 per unit, the Bescom officials said they would charge only ₹7 per unit, making them even more attractive.

The officials attributed the success of the EV charging station at the Kempegowda International Airport to its affordability.
