Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister P. K. Sekarbabu on Sunday said in Chennai, priests in temples should not indulge in political activities inside the places of worship. They should confine themselves to conducting pujas to the deities and attending to their other designated duties in the temples.

Responding to a question about a priest in the Singaravelar temple at Sikkal allegedly asking devotees to vote for a certain political party, he said an enquiry would be conducted in the matter and if there was any truth in it, necessary action would be taken.

He was speaking after a function where weddings of four couples was conducted on behalf of the 400-year-old Somanathaswamy temple in Kolathur. The minister said the kumbhabhishekam of the temple would be held on November 30. Works totalling ₹2.37 crore had been taken up at the temple.
