The Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, alleged that his car was attacked by Trinamool Congress workers on Saturday (January 10, 2026) night when he was returning from a public event in Purulia.

Seeking the arrest of the Trinamool workers, the BJP leader sat on a dharna at the Chandrakona Police Station in Paschim Medinipur district. He said he would not move from the station till the authorities took action.

“Tonight, around 8.20 p.m., while I was returning from Purulia, at Chandrakona Road in Paschim Medinipur district, I was viciously attacked by Trinamool goons. These cowards, emboldened by the Mamata Banerjee regime’s culture of violence and impunity, attacked me right in the presence of the Mamata Police,” he said.

Nine named in complaint

Mr. Adhikari gave a written complaint at the local police station naming nine persons, all “known Trinamool faces”.

The BJP MLA also alleged that the local police did not intervene and remained spectators when he was attacked by the “goons”. Mr. Adhikari added that it was not just an attack on him but the entire Opposition.

Mr. Adhikari and the BJP handles on social media shared the video of the said attack. It showed two groups of men carrying BJP and Trinamool flags quarrelling on the road. The BJP workers reportedly wanted to felicitate Mr. Adhikari when they were allegedly attacked by the Trinamool workers.

It is alleged that Mr. Adhikari vehicle was attacked with sticks and bamboo. Slogans and counter-slogans continued on both sides. Even after the scuffle, the police did not reach the site, the BJP said.

The Trinamool has not responded to the allegations till now.

In August 2025, Mr. Adhikari’s car was attacked in Cooch Behar. He had then accused Trinamool Minister Udayan Guha and the local police of orchestrating the attack.
