Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said on Sunday that those who have realised that it was not an easy task to change or remove the existing Constitution are attempting to slowly weaken it.

“When Dr. B.R. Ambedkar offered the Constitution to the country, there were people opposed to it. Those who are opposed to the Constitution are opposed to social and economic justice. People should understand that these people are against poor, farmers, labourers, Dalits and oppressed sections of society,” the Chief Minister said in his message on the occasion of Republic Day.

He said: “There is a plot to slowly provide poison. We have to be aware of these plots to weaken the Constitution and make it irrelevant by snatching away the autonomy of Constitutional institutions. If we protect the Constitution, it will protect us and the country will remain stronger. We have to take a pledge to protect the Constitution on this Republic Day,”

Justifying the guarantee schemes, he said that the schemes are being implemented as per the Article 47 of the Directive Principles of State Policy in the Constitution that makes the government’s primary responsibility to provide for nutrition and improve quality of life. “While economically weaker sections in the State are receiving about ₹60,000 to ₹70,000 annually, middle and upper middle class families are saving about ₹25,000 to ₹30,000 annually.” The Chief Minister said: “The Constitution has guided the government in its thoughts and programmes. The government and I are committed to the Constitution.”
