More than a month after a stalker attacked her, Mridumudra Deka died due to her injuries at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Friday (July 3, 2026) morning.

The 18-year-old Mridumudra Deka was critically injured when the accused, Roz Ali, who had a crush on her, attacked her when she was heading home along with her cousin Madhurjya Barman on the night of May 30 at Mukalmua in western Assam’s Nalbari district. Madhurjya died on the spot.

Mridumudra was rushed to the GMCH, about 50 km east of where the incident occurred, with serious injuries. “She had shown signs of recovery initially, but her condition deteriorated in the last 24 hours,” one of the doctors who treated her said.

The attack sparked outrage across Assam. Residents, student bodies, and organisations in the Mukalmua demanded swift action.

The police traced Mr. Ali the following day, where he was shot after allegedly snatching a constable’s firearm and trying to flee.
