Andhra Pradesh CPI secretary demands caste census for development of backward classes

CPI State secretary K. Ramakrishna has demanded taking up of caste census for the development of backward classes in the society.

Speaking at a meeting organised by the CPI demanding enumeration of castes during the population census, Mr Ramakrishna said there is a need to exert pressure on the government for meeting the demand. “If need arises, we should be prepared to take out Chalo Amaravati rally,” he said.

Mr. Ramakrishna said the Telangana and Karnataka governments have taken up caste census and the Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi is also having a clear understanding on the issue. He said that the caste census will give a picture of the population and social status of backward castes and strategies can be drawn based on the data to develop these castes.

He said only a few castes among the 143 BC communities have developed and people from these few castes went on to become MLAs and MPs while the others were lagging behind. He said that they are fighting for a caste-less society but such a society can be achieved only with the equal development of people of all the castes.
