In an environment-friendly initiative, the Amaravati Development Corporation Limited (ADCL) has successfully revived and replanted 60 tamarind trees, each nearly 60 years old, while undertaking road expansion works in the capital region.

Normally, trees that obstruct road construction are felled, or heavily trimmed. However, during the widening of the E-15 Road, connecting Nidamarru and Mangalagiri, the ADCL officials have chosen to conserve the old trees that line both sides of the stretch.

ADCL Chairperson and Managing Director D. Lakshmi Parthasarathy, in a communication on Wednesday, said the corporation’s horticulture experts undertook a carefully planned translocation process. Using earth-movers, the base of each tree was cleaned, and decayed roots were removed and overgrown branches pruned. The trees were then carefully shifted on heavy trolley lorries to an ADCL-designated translocation site nearby.

For nearly 30 days, the trees were treated and nurtured to help them develop new roots. Once stabilised, they were replanted along the expanded E-15 Road at their original locations. About 20 of the trees were replanted along the E-12 Road.

“The trees have since regained life,” the officials said, adding that the effort would ensure shade, cool air and ecological balance.
