Thrissur District Collector Arjun Pandian has announced that all arrangements for the upcoming local body elections have been completed. He, also the District Election Officer, was addressing a press conference at the Collectorate Executive Conference Hall on Tuesday. He urged all voters to reach their respective polling stations and cast their votes, and appealed for cooperation to ensure a peaceful poll.
A total of 7,208 candidates are contesting across 2,204 wards or divisions under the district’s 111 local self-government institutions. Among them are 3,395 men and 3,813 women.
According to the final electoral roll, the district has 27,36,817 voters, including 14,59,670 women, 12,77,120 men, 27 transgender voters, and 280 pravasi electors. As many as 54,204 are first-time voters.
Polling deployment
The district has set up 3,282 polling stations. For polling duty, 15,753 officials have been deployed, including 3,282 presiding officers, 3,282 first polling officers, and 6,564 polling officers. An additional 20% staff has been kept in reserve. A total of 4,757 police personnel will also be on election duty.
Thrissur will operate 24 distribution and reception centres for voting machines, along with 24 strong rooms. For the election, 13,158 ballot units and 4,572 control units, including 25 percent kept in reserve, will be used. In case of technical issues, sector officers will supply replacement machines. The district has been divided into 214 sectors, each comprising around 20 polling stations.
Distribution of polling materials will begin on December 10. Voting will take place on December 11 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Counting of votes will begin at 8 a.m. on December 13 across 25 counting centres. Postal ballots for the district panchayat will be counted under the supervision of the Collector at the Collectorate.
All educational institutions that serve as polling stations or distribution/collection centres will remain closed on December 10. December 11, the polling day, will be a holiday for all government, public-sector and private institutions in the district. Educational institutions functioning as strong rooms or counting centres will remain closed on December 12 as well.
A dry day has been declared for 48 hours starting from 6 a.m. on December 10, and on the counting day, December 13. The election will be conducted in full compliance with green protocols.
