The Congress on Saturday (October 18, 2025) resumed a district-wise chain hunger strike in Jammu and Kashmir over the demand for restoration of Statehood.
“The Congress will press for the demand of Statehood restoration. We demand that the Centre should respect the aspirations of people of J&K. People are feeling neglected in absence of Statehood, as their rights have been denied and compromised. We will not rest till the Statehood is restored,” J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Tariq Hameed Karra said.
As part of the protest programme titled, ‘Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq’ (Statehood is our right), senior Congress leaders, including former Minister Taj Mohi Ud Din, joined the hunger strike of District Congress Committee, Baramulla, observed at the party headquarters in Srinagar.

“’Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq’ is Congress party’s indigenous movement. It shall continue till the Centre restores the dignity and honour of the erstwhile princely State of J&K,” Mr. Karra said.
The Congress had called off the campaign after the Pahalgam terror attack in April this year.
Meanwhile, the Congress said all options were open when it comes to the upcoming by-elections for Nagrota and Budgam seats in J&K. “The NC has offered support for Nagrota seat. We have put the case before our central high command. We are waiting for their response,” Mr. Karra said.
