Students in Guwahati stage a protest demanding justice after the death of singer Zubeen Garg

The Assam government has decided to request the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court to constitute a fast-track court for Zubeen Garg’s death trial.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told journalists on Thursday (October 16, 2025) that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case was confident of filing the charge sheet by the first week of December, although the police statutorily get 90 days to do so.
“Courts usually take time to deliver judgments, but people want justice fast. The Cabinet has thus decided that the Chief Justice would be contacted so that we get a fast-track court as soon as the charge sheet is filed,” he said.
He further stated that the government decided to appoint a Special Public Prosecutor in consultation with the State’s Advocate General. The Special Public Prosecutor will exclusively work on the case during the period, from the filing of the charge sheet till the pronouncement of judgment by the court.
The Government, meanwhile, constituted an 11-member committee to transform the site where Garg’s last rites were performed into a permanent ‘samadhisthal’ (memorial). The committee has the singer’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, and Guwahati Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to visit the site at Sonapur on Friday. The Chief Minister welcomed the visit but criticised Gandhi for the delay.
