As the northeast monsoon is expected to be intense, additional measures are being taken in low-lying areas based on councillors’ requests, said Chennai Mayor Priya Rajan on Saturday (October 11, 2025).

“The amount of rainfall during the northeast monsoon may be high this year, as per information received. But nature cannot be predicted. The stormwater drain works are under way across GCC limits. Also, 100-HP capacity motor pumps will be deployed in low-lying areas,” Ms. Rajan told reporters.

Earlier, Ms. Rajan participated in a ground-breaking ceremony of a badminton indoor stadium to come up at Millennium Park in Anna Nagar West Extension at an estimated at ₹93 lakh under the Mayor’s Development Fund and inaugurated the EmpowHer women’s gym in the same park, completed at a cost of ₹25 lakh under GCC’s Capital Fund.

Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments P.K. Sekarbabu, officials and elected members were present.
