Burglars decamped with 30 sovereigns of gold jewellery, 1 kg of silver objects and around ₹5 lakh cash from the house of a retired railway officer in Arakkonam town on Tuesday.

The police said that the victim, Moindeen Sharif, 68, was a retired railway official.

Initial inquiry revealed that along with family members, Moindeen had gone to visit his son in Chennai for a week.  When he returned, he found cupboards broken in the living room and bedroom.

The police said that gold ornaments and cash that were kept in the cupboards were missing. The rear door of the house was also damaged. On being informed, Arakkonam Town police inspected the spot.

CCTV cameras in the house and along the route were taken to identify suspects. A case was registered. Special teams were formed to nab the suspects. A probe is under way.
