Aegurla Mallesham of Jagtial district is reportedly still in a Dubai jail despite completing his six-month prison term, as he is unable to pay a fine of AED 1,50,000 (approximately ₹ 39 lakh) imposed by a local court.

His family has sought the Telangana government’s intervention for his release and repatriation to India. Mallesham, a native of Mothukuraopet village, went to Muscat, Oman, in 2018 in search of employment. According to sources, he later entered the UAE from Oman without a passport or visa and remained in Dubai for nearly eight years before being apprehended during an inspection on March 8.

A Dubai court sentenced him to six months in prison and imposed the fine, followed by deportation, in connection with his entry into UAE from Oman without a passport of visa and alleged illegal stay there. His wife Latha and mother Buchavva recently petitioned Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy through CM Pravasi Prajavani in Hyderabad, seeking his release and repatriation to India.

Mandha Bheem Reddy, Vice-Chairman of the Telangana Government’s NRI Advisory Committee, said the government had obtained details of the case through the Indian Consulate in Dubai. Consulate officials visited Awir Jail and met Mallesham on July 23, he said. According to Mr. Reddy, consultations are being held with legal experts on the possibility of waiving the fine, seeking a pardon or pursuing other available legal remedies to secure Mallesham’s release and facilitate his repatriation to India.
