A 33-year-old courier executive who allegedly staged his own murder 11 years ago to escape mounting debts and claim life insurance money has been arrested by Kyasamballi police, KGF.
Kumar, a resident of Ramapuram village, had reportedly borrowed heavily from local moneylenders. He was working for a private firm and had a life insurance policy. The police said he hatched a plan to make it appear that he had been murdered, so that his family could claim the insurance amount and the moneylenders would stop pursuing him.
According to the police, Kumar dug up a grave and took the body of a youth, which he later set on fire under a bridge. To strengthen the deception, he allegedly left his motorcycle, identity card and slippers near the charred body.
Based on a complaint filed by Kumar’s father, the Andersonpete police registered a murder case in February 2015. However, the postmortem examination raised doubts about the identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigation subsequently revealed that Kumar had staged the entire episode.
He had been tracked down and taken into judicial custody but managed to secure bail about a year later and fled to Chennai. After he repeatedly failed to appear before the court, a non-bailable warrant was issued against him.
The Kyasamballi police recently intensified efforts to trace him. After making several visits to Chennai and keeping a watch on his movements, the police confirmed his identity and arrested him on Sunday (August 23).
The police said Kumar had been living in Chennai under a fake identity with a woman. He had allegedly concealed his real identity because the house owner was unwilling to rent the premises to a bachelor.
The police said he had not contacted his parents even once during the 11 years he remained away.
The accused was brought to Kyasamballi police station and produced before a magistrate on Sunday, following which he was remanded in judicial custody.
