A day after relentless rain left several parts of Ernakulam reeling, the district witnessed marked improvement in weather conditions on Sunday (August 2, 2026). Water levels were gradually receding in several affected areas, with heavy downpours giving way to a clear sky mostly. Life was returning to normal in Kothamangalam and Muvattupuzha, where torrential rain caused significant damage on Saturday (August 1).

Water level of Muvattupuzha and Thodupuzha rivers was still above the warning levels, though. As of 12 noon on Sunday (August 1), the water level of the Muvattupuzha River stood at 11.79 metres below the critical mark of 11.93 metres. However, it was still above the warning level of 10.92 metres. The Thodupuzha river recorded a water level of 11.68 metre where the warning level is 10.78 metres. The critical level of the river is 11.79 metres. At Kaliyar river, the water level remained at 12.51 metres below the warning level of 13.10 metre, according to official data.

The district administration, meanwhile, warned that the water level of the Malankara dam may rise to the warning level in view of the possible inflow from the Moolamattom power house and rain likely in the catchment areas. The shutters of the dam would be opened in a gradual manner to regulate the water level and ensure safety of the areas downstream, according to an official release.

Officials with the Disaster Management Authority said no rain-related issues were reported in the district till noon in the district, both from the hilly and coastal regions. Officials said the relief camps opened in Muvattupuzha and Kothamangalam taluks were still functioning and the district administration is prepared to face adverse weather conditions in the coming days.

Kothamangalam MLA Shibu Thekkumpuram said that the situation was under control in the region as the sky remained clear since morning. He said the jangar service at Blavana across the Pooyamkutty River has been restored, bringing relief to the villages and tribal hamlets which were cut off on Saturday (August 1). The water has receded from the Manikandanchal causeway too, he said. “The entire administrative machinery has been asked to stay alert. A 24-hour control room has been opened at the MLA office,” Mr. Thekkumpuram said.
