A 41-year-old driver escaped unhurt after a luxury Volvo bus caught fire on the elevated corridor of Chennai – Bengaluru Highway (NH 48) near Poigai village in Vellore on Thursday.

The police said that driver K. Shanmugam was driving a recovery vehicle with a defunct luxury bus, which was classified as scrap, when he noticed smoke from the rear side of the bus.

Immediately, the driver disconnected the recovery vehicle and the bus. Before firefighters from Vellore doused the fire, the bus was completely gutted.

The rescued person was sent to Government Taluk Hospital in town for medical checkup. The police removed the charred vehicle from the carriageway to resume traffic movement on the stretch. A case has been registered. A probe is under way.
