BJP MP Jagadish Shettar has urged the Union government to begin the process of transferring civilian areas n the military cantonment of Belagavi to the city corporation.

The Lok Sabha member submitted a memorandum to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh during a recent meeting in New Delhi.

Mr. Shettar said that as per the decisions of the Defence Ministry and as per the directions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, all civilian areas within military cantonments are to be handed over to the respective local urban self-government bodies after a joint survey.

Several meetings have been held between Defence, the district administration and the city corporation officials in Belagavi, but the transfer of land has been delayed.

The MP handed over documents with details of civilian areas in the Belgaum Cantonment area and sought their transfer to the local authorities.

He said that details have been sent to the Chief Secretary of the State and the Secretary of the Defence Department, New Delhi. Mr. Shettar requested Mr. Singh to ensure that this handover process takes place as soon as possible.

The MP also urged Mr. Singh to consider the proposal of setting up defence manufacturing industries in Belagavi.

The Defence Minister has assured him of looking into the issues raised as per the discussion and take prompt action, said a release from Mr. Shettar.
