The Erode district police on Sunday (January 18, 2026) night arrested two functionaries of the Jananaayaga Elurchi Kazhagam for allegedly posting provocative content on social media that could incite tension between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

The arrested persons were identified as K. Silambarasan, 36, of Mamarathupalayam and J. Abdul Malik, 20, of B.P. Agraharam in the city. The police said the accused had uploaded and circulated objectionable posts allegedly targeting people from Karnataka and spreading messages capable of disturbing harmony between the two neighbouring States.

According to the police, the posts included statements opposing the movement of Karnataka-registered vehicles into Tamil Nadu and content that could provoke unrest and law-and-order issues.

Based on the investigation, a case was registered at the Erode North Police Station, and the accused were arrested and produced before a magistrate court, which remanded them to judicial custody.

In a press release, Superintendent of Police A. Sujatha cautioned that stringent legal action would be taken against individuals who create, share, or forward social media content that promotes enmity on the basis of caste, religion, or between States, or that threatens public peace.
