K.T. Augusti, biochemist and academician, passed away in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday aged 93.
Dr. Augusti is noted for his work on plant-derived nutraceuticals, and is considered a pioneer in the research on the medicinal properties of garlic and other Allium species.
A native of Pala, he earned his PhD in Biochemistry from BITS Pilani and devoted more than four decades to teaching and research in India and abroad, including the University of Kerala and the University of Maiduguri, Nigeria.
He was also the founder general secretary of the Kerala Academy of Sciences and helped to establish it as a scientific movement. After his retirement, he continued to publish essays, poetry, and historical writings.
He is survived by his wife Alice, sons Thomas Augustine, Jose Augustine and Paul Augustine.
